Frequently asked questions

Atticus is a new kind of law firm on a mission to reinvent how Americans seek and find legal help. Personal injury law is filled with $$$ on billboards and flashy TV ads, but it is difficult to figure out who is actually a good lawyer. Some lawyers take forever to settle a claim, pressure clients to see a certain doctor, settle early for less than the client is entitled to, disappear after the first phone call, purchase Google reviews, charge you upfront, or actively commit fraud. People with serious legal needs are left wondering: “Do I need a lawyer? What will I get if I hire one? How much will it cost?” And, of course, “Which one should I choose?” Atticus is the place where anyone can get rapid, experienced help answering those questions — for free. We diagnose clients’ needs, explain their options, and help them find and hire the right lawyer to move forward.
At the bottom of many websites, you’ll find a small disclaimer: “we are not a law firm and are not qualified to give legal advice.” If you see this, run the other way. These people can’t help you: they’re prohibited by law from giving meaningful advice, recommending specific lawyers, or even telling you whether you need a lawyer at all. Atticus is a law firm. We fully represent or co-counsel every client we take on, i.e., we’re invested in your case from start to finish. When you call us we answer your most pressing questions and make clear recommendations. We don’t bill hourly or sell your data. We only make money one way, and that’s if you win your case. Two important things to note: If we give you legal advice, it will be through a lawyer on our staff or co-counsel communicating with you directly. (Don’t make important decisions about your case based solely on this or any other website.) And if we take you on as a client, it will be through a document you sign. (No attorney-client relationship arises from using this site or calling us.)
Here’s how it works: you call Atticus and get a free case evaluation with an actual lawyer. If you hire us, we will co-counsel your case with a high-quality, ethical lawyer who has a track record of success in exactly what you need. For the same or lower cost than a billboard lawyer you get: • Represented by a high-quality, ethical lawyer who has a proven experience in exactly what you need • Regular check-ins from Atticus to make sure your case is on track, and • A dedicated team at Atticus to support holistic recovery (e.g., help figuring out how to cover groceries when you can’t work, help negotiating with your health insurance, and help accessing job protection for a family member who is taking care of you)
If you hire us, there are no upfront costs and we’ll only get paid if you win your case. All cases have a 33.33% attorneys’ fee, which is split between Atticus and any lawyer who co-counsels your case with us. This includes any Benefits Concierge and Patient Advocate services you use from Atticus. Nationwide, most personal injury attorneys take somewhere between 33.33% and 50% of your final settlement, and many lawyers will increase your fee if your case proceeds to litigation or trial. At Atticus, we keep it simple – 33.33% regardless of when you receive your settlement or how long it takes.
Atticus is best positioned to represent people who have been seriously injured by a company or individual, but we offer free case evaluations to anyone who has been injured and will help you if we can. Types of cases we take: motor vehicle accidents (car accident, truck accident, motorcycle accident, pedestrian accident, bike accident, rideshare accident), work accidents (construction accident, workers’ compensation, loading dock accident). Types of cases we do not take: medical malpractice, assault, criminal law, immigration law, employment law, family law, sports injuries, weather-related injuries.
We wish we could give you a yes or no, but the answer is truly maybe. Call us for a free case evaluation from a lawyer. Broadly, Atticus will represent you (directly or through co-counsel) if, and only if, we think it is in your best interest to hire a lawyer and your case is in a practice area where we have experience and have vetted ethical, high-quality lawyers. We do not think every insurance claim benefits from a lawyer. Some signs you should strongly consider hiring a lawyer include: your injuries are serious and ongoing, you have significant medical bills or lost income, insurance is delaying, denying, or lowballing, or you have questions about your rights or documents you are being asked to sign. Some signs you may not need a lawyer include: you have no injuries or your injuries are very minor, fault is clear and undisputed, and insurance is being cooperative and giving you a fair amount.
In a space where many companies skirt regulations, we embrace them. We’re a licensed law firm and Certified B Corp. We have over 15,000 5-star reviews on TrustPilot. In 2025, we won the American Bar Association’s Award for Legal Access. The best way to figure out if you trust us is to call us. Talk to a human and ask us all of your questions, with no obligation.
Atticus makes sure you are in control of your medical care. Unlike some other personal injury lawyers, we will never pressure you to see a specific doctor or to go outside your health insurer. There’s a chance you’ll have to go outside your insurer, if they simply refuse to cover your care. But we’ll give you all the options you have and respect your decision. We’ll also never pressure you to get unnecessary medical care to goose your settlement. If you are having trouble accessing your health insurance benefits or understanding your healthcare options, we will pair you with an independent Board Certified Patient Advocate to help you.
At Atticus, we know that recovering from an accident is more than just getting legal representation. That’s why every Atticus personal injury client has access to our Benefits Concierge team. They help you figure out how to cover the bills and access everyday essentials so you and your family can focus on healing. Our team will assess what you need, figure out what programs (e.g., employer STD/LTD, FMLA, SDI) and resources (e.g., groceries help, utility bill relief) are available to you. If you choose to apply for a program, we can usually help you with the application process (depending on the program; sometimes legally it needs to be you applying for it). We’ll coordinate with your legal team so you understand what might happen to your settlement if you apply for them.
Atticus has a dedicated team committed to vetting personal injury lawyers. Our goal is to connect you only with an excellent personal injury lawyer who will get you everything you’re entitled to and treat you with respect. Lawyers cannot pay to work with us and must commit to upholding standards of client service to work with us. Here are some of the factors we use when vetting lawyers: • Transparency on fees: Atticus lawyers have agreed to only charge 33% of any contingency fees. They won’t charge you unnecessary costs and you’ll never owe anything if your case doesn’t result in a recovery. • All-inclusive law firm: Here to help answer any questions related to your accident – even if that includes things that might not necessarily be legal i.e. property damage and medical bill help • Specialization: Atticus works with lawyers specializing in Personal Injury law. You want an attorney who has focused extensively on Personal Injury and who understands the process inside and out. • Wins: Results are important, and we look for lawyers with proven track records of winning benefits for their clients. • Treating clients with respect: We look for lawyers who are easy for clients to reach, kind to work with, and who make clients feel ready and confident about their case. • Reputation: We seek out lawyers respected by the bar and well-regarded by their peers, with a proven track record of sharing knowledge with the field. • Size of firm: We work with both solo lawyers and big firms and don’t prefer one over the other. Some cases fit better with certain firms. • Experience: We look for experience not only in a given area of law but with similar facts, judges or agencies, and client goals.
Atticus and our lawyers works on contingency, which means you pay nothing upfront. Our fee is 33% of your settlement, and we’re upfront about that from day one. That fee covers everything: a lawyer matched to your specific case, a team handling your insurance claims and medical bills, benefits support, and a dedicated point of contact throughout your recovery. No add-ons, no surprises at the end. Here’s how the math works: if you recover $100,000, you keep $67,000 — and we handle everything it took to get there.
For serious injuries, yes. Insurance companies have adjusters whose entire job is to minimize your payout. Having the right legal team not only means you won’t get short changed, but also ensures you’re getting your medical care covered.
Atticus is creating the new standard for Personal Injury law firms. Other PI firms focus exclusively on the settlement. Atticus works differently. You get a full team: a top lawyer who handles the legal strategy, a Recovery Advocate that helps you stay in control of your medical care, and a Benefits Coordinator that helps you access resources while you recover. A full team means fewer things fall through the cracks, and you’re not the one holding it all together while you’re still recovering.
It depends on your state, but most have a statute of limitations between one and three years from the date of injury. Unfortunately, if you miss that window and you lose your right to file entirely. The sooner you start, the more options you have.
Most serious injury claims cover medical bills (past and future), lost wages, and pain and suffering. Depending on your case, you may also recover property damage and other out-of-pocket costs. Atticus helps make sure nothing gets left off the table.
Straightforward cases can settle in a few months. Complex ones can take a year or more. It depends on the severity of your injuries, how clear fault is, and how the other side responds. What you shouldn’t have to do is wonder where things stand, which is why Atticus keeps you informed throughout.
